Serena Scott Thomas (Actor), Peter Davison (Actor), James Cellan Jones (Director) & 0 more Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over Format: VHS Tape Harnessing Peacocks [1992] [VHS] – Girl meets guy, losses him, builds a life anyway.

‘harnessing peacocks’ is a beautiful adaptation of the mary wesley novel. Serena scott thomas is the english rose who is disowned by her affluent loved ones for demonstrating up expecting immediately after a carnival with no plan who the father is. Her unjust exile, qualified prospects her to marketing her sexual favours to a choose few males who she cares about and who care deeply for her, in purchase to provide for her son. This isnt prostitution, its a easy company arrangement with feelings connected. As with many of the tv set diversifications of the early 90’s, i consider it would be tricky to make this nowadays. Ahead of the reduction of national identity in britain and the eu relationship there was an air of ‘british quaintness’ to these productions that doesnt exist actually any more. Really worth digging out at the time a 12 months to get pleasure from, particularly john mills as the world weary charmer. Appreciate spotting the areas in the residence counties that you know (amersham sector and so on) and dip your nose back again into a time when maybe, existence truly was a little bit considerably less challenging.

I watched this on television and video taped it. I was thrilled to see it as a dvd and have relished viewing it time and time yet again. Very good plot, terrific actors and actresses. Truly feel i would like them as my have pals.

So joyful that i located it on dvd.

A good operate of cinema graphic artwork that brings together all the attributes so lacking in most modern-day movies.

Pretty dated but it has a great forged, so l loved watching this dvd and will watch yet again. Value purchasing if you like girly videos.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Excellent in every way
  • Mary Wesley at her best
  • lovely dvd watched many times

A sentimental, but satisfying tale of enjoy misplaced and adore identified, with a handful of aspect tales that are incredibly human and humorous, as perfectly.

How does a youthful female from a rich family with no expertise or schooling assist herself and her little one when they convert their backs on her?. An completely charming movie centered on e-book by mary wesley. The people are charming, the plot whole of twists, the surroundings is stunning, and the man will get his woman in the finish.

Not undesirable but nothing special right here. Could seriously place it in a category. The actors are ok but the directing isn’t.

Almost certainly not a person for any person who does not like intercourse or lousy language – but i love this romp.

This is a rather enjoyable small movie – from some time back again thoughts you -1992 – andnice to see kristin scott thomas’s sister undertaking a fantastic occupation. Disgrace that the transfer to dvd is very bad. Grainy and a fairly washed out colour saturate. The seem receives a little bit out of sync too i am scared. This is possibly a bad machines transfer process of the time, or a very poor unique tape from which it was copied. This illustration of the movie was generated for dvd in 2003. There is a a great deal more new duplicate created in 2011 (distinct dvd scenario address photograph), and this is very likely to be a considerably much better duplicate. Perhaps truly worth a consider for those people who basically will have to have this movie in their collection.

Great little tale glad to have it again in my library.

Absent spherical the full household ,it was great.

A lovely movie from a beautiful e-book.

Obtaining study all of mary wesleys book this dvd fulfilled all my up to my expictions.

Quite pleasant and beautiful to see all the mature actors eg. Satisfied ending also which is usually welcome .

This is a person of mary wesley’s very best, fantastically directed and acted. The story is pretty risqué but really believable, you get to see serena scott thomas putting on a hat (that’s all) and the figures are all brilliantly portrayed.

There is a slight delay amongst speech/lip movement and actual seem particularly towards the stop of the film. I would like the dvd replacing asap. Be sure to suggest the treatment for undertaking this.

A beautiful movie which closely follows the fantastic book. It is effectively cast and manufactured. I beforehand experienced the vhs version and this has been perfectly generated on dvd.

I enjoy mary wesley’s textbooks and this film did not disappoint.

Excellent valueand servicethank you.

A sweetly claustrophobic tale of the tempestuous and almost incestuous whirl that lies beneath the genteel and respectable surface of civilised society in the south west of england. Harnessing peacocks is great fun, and is a well acted, well presented, rather saucy drawing room comedy, that also manages to expose the hypocrisy of ‘the right sort of people’. Vivacious, and fun, and with just a small dollop of romance.

Our family has a grainy vhs copy of this movie which we made while watching it on the american pbs network years ago. We’ve looked everywhere for a dvd version but never found one until now. Too bad it is pal format rather than ntsc, but a friend has a machine that plays both, so we got to watch it again with his family. The quality is excellent, and there were some surprises too. Our version must have be shortened to fit in the commercials, so we saw some scenes that are new to us.

    1. Harnessing peacocks [dvd]this film is quite good in spite of a weak musical theme repeated over & over throughout. The story is delightful altho very little to do with any reality. It is fun & lovely & worth the watch. Oddly enough i will watch this film many times more than once just because the story is very romantic.

If you like mary wesley you will love this and indeed if you like a good love story, with no violence or gore, only fab britishness you will also like it. It is a winters day or sunday afternoon easy watch, easy of the eye but not earth-shattering either. I personally loved it and my hubby very kindly watched it with me too.

This is a rather pleasant little movie – from some time back mind you -1992 – andnice to see kristin scott thomas’s sister doing a good job. Shame that the transfer to dvd is very poor. Grainy and a rather washed out colour saturate. The sound gets a bit out of sync too i’m afraid. This is probably a poor equipment transfer method of the time, or a poor original tape from which it was copied. This example of the movie was produced for dvd in 2003. There is a much more recent copy produced in 2011 (different dvd case cover picture), and this is likely to be a much better copy. Maybe worth a try for those who simply must have this film in their collection.

      1. “harnessing peacocks” is a lovely adaptation of the mary wesley novel. Serena scott thomas is the english rose who is disowned by her affluent family for showing up pregnant after a carnival with no idea who the father is. Her unjust exile, leads her to selling her sexual favours to a select few men who she cares about and who care deeply for her, in order to provide for her son. This isnt prostitution, its a simple business arrangement with feelings attached. As with many of the tv adaptations of the early 90’s, i think it would be hard to make this today. Before the loss of national identity in britain and the eu connection there was an air of “british quaintness” to these productions that doesnt exist really any more. Worth digging out once a year to enjoy, especially john mills as the world weary charmer. Enjoy spotting the locations in the home counties that you know (amersham market etc) and dip your nose back into a time when perhaps, life really was a bit less complicated.

  24. Serena scott thomas as hebe, peter davison as jim. John mills as bernard along with the supporting caste give firstrate performances in this very watchable dramatisation of the book by mary wesley. It’s the kind of story that readily creates a ‘feel good’ state of mind in the viewer. It’s a dateless work embued with a timelessness fitting in with any day and age. Hebe, so well portrayed by serena scott thomas, comes across as a resourceful, intelligent young woman who has turned an early mistake into a lucrative business in the nicest possible way. This production brings out the inherent humour within the tale without ever feeling the need to force it upon the viewer in the silly way that so often spoils adaptations of this kind. The affectations and quasi-moral standards of the nouveau riche are delightfully portrayed. Ms scott thomas’s appearances in both full frontal and full rear view nude postures are a delight to behold as she portrays the ‘i’m me: take me or leave me as i am’ attitude of hebe’s character. Having made that one big mistake hebe has become the good mother and strong woman who will now always be in charge even when she finally entraps the cause of her orginal faux pas. The whole story is a paean in praise of womanhood as, resplendant in her carriage drawn by her well-harnessed peacocks, she continues on her way ever triumphant.

Harnessing peacocks is not slick, has no overdeveloped hero’s bristling with light artillery, no foul language, no overt sex and no vehicles, aircraft, ships or people are vaporized in balls of flames. For those reasons, and others, the film may be a disappointment to some. It’s escapism rather than real life of course, but escapism delivered by a superb selection of actors, including but not only the great john mills. He, along with the captivating serena scott thomas and her screen son silas (perfectly played by young tom beasley), take us on a gentle, enchanting and thoroughly enjoyably trip set in an equally enjoyable landscape. Overall the casting is perfect and hammy they are certainly not. Perhaps a tiny bit over the top at times, and tongue in cheek at others, but as i said, it is fiction. It’s also amusing, it’s delightful, and it shouldn’t be missed.
